The damage keeps on giving, and many mines require water treatment “in perpetuity,” because of the drainage and hazardous metals leaching into the waterways. While it may seem easy enough to pursue a mining company for damages, it becomes an economic and ecological burden to the public once a company files for bankruptcy or refuses to cover water treatment costs.
